Haines to Tok

Leaving Haines, AK we headed up the Haines Highway to Haines Junction in the Yukon where we turned onto the Alaska Highway heading to Tok. Just past Destruction Bay we stopped for the night at a roadside rest, knowing the road from there gets really rough and we thought it best to do that in the morning. And it didn’t disappoint! – many potholes, gravel sections, ruts, frost heaves, and construction. Our speed varied from 15 mph to 50 mph. No photos- they wouldn’t do it justice! We drove this highway 8 years ago in a 34 ft class A motorhome (our 2004 Monaco Knight) and driving our new, smaller class C motorhome (Renegade Vienna), the experience seemed to be less harsh and didn’t buck going over the frost heaves or bottom out. I think the road itself was no better now than then, but this motorhome handled it better.

We finally crossed back into Alaska and tonight we are happily staying about 5 miles from Tok at Tok River State Recreation Site.
