Continuing the trip on the ferry up the Alaska coast, we had a 6 hour layover in Ketchikan. We thought we would explore the town, however, we got there too early (6:30 am) and most shops were closed. The bus schedule was confusing, so we just walked around the town. But too soon, the town filled with cruise ship passengers. So we took a taxi to Totem Bright State Historical Park to see the Totem Poles. Thinking we had figured out the bus schedule, we took a bus back to town but then were shocked when the driver insisted on picking up so many people that it was standing room only, and shoulder to shoulder! The schedule showed a stop at the ferry terminal, but the driver continued on. By the time he stopped, we were a mile from the ferry terminal. We had an hour to get back, and when trying to get a cab or Uber failed, we started walking. Fortunately we were able to flag down a cab and made it back to the ferry, just in time! Ketchikan has beautiful scenery and amazing totem poles, but too many people when the cruise ships stop!
