Drove the Jeep on the Denali Highway from Cantwell to Paxson and back, a total of 268 miles. Only the first 3 miles and last 21 miles were paved. The rest was unpaved and described in the Milepost book as ranging “from good gravel to rough and rocky” with “stretches of washboard and potholes”. But the Milepost also said “If you want real wilderness scenery – vast tundra-covered valleys where caribou roam beneath breathtaking snow-covered mountains, then this Highway is for you”. So off we went! The road turned out to be better than we expected, although the weather was more rain than we’d hoped, but the book was spot on about the scenery! Photos can’t do it justice! We really felt small and insignificant against the backdrop of amazing beauty and solitude.

As promised- caribou

Even saw some baby foxes playing by the side of the road. Mama fox was nowhere in sight and their den was near the road, so the kids were into mischief, I’m sure!
