Drove the jeep to Whittier today to see the Portage Glacier. Saw both a bear and a moose!

The only road into Whittier goes through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. It’s a single lane and both trains and cars use this tunnel, so there’s a schedule to allow both railway and highway traffic. It takes 6.5 minutes to travel through the tunnel. We were fortunate enough to not have to wait more than a few minutes to go through either way.

Unfortunately we didn’t stay long in Whittier, as it was cold, rainy, and windy. On the way back we stopped at Potter Marsh. There’s an extensive boardwalk that crosses the marsh and we saw a bald eagle and a moose- for real!

A few years ago we took the ferry from Valdez to Whittier in the rain and rode the bike through the tunnel. The lady directing vehicles into the tunnel had us wait to be the last vehicle into the tunnel in case we fell down. She said not to go over 25 mph and don’t touch the rail or we would go down. Believe me we never got near 25 mph. I was very careful and relieved when we came out the other end.

We thought about you when we went through the tunnel, and wondered if you had ridden the bike through. Imagined that it must be VERY scary!

We did the same tunnel in a bus that took us to the Cruise ship…even in the bus it was a little scary.
