Whittier

Drove the jeep to Whittier today to see the Portage Glacier. Saw both a bear and a moose! The only road into Whittier goes through the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. It’s a single lane and both trains and cars use this tunnel, so there’s a schedule to allow both railway and highway traffic. It takes […]

Anchorage, by bicycle

Started off the day with a moose sighting at the Anchorage Market and Festival. Then we rode our bikes on the Tony Knowles Costal Trail that follows the coastline of Anchorage along the Knik Arm and Cook Inlet. We were told to watch for bears and moose that can sometimes be seen along the trail. […]

Back to Anchorage

Left the Kenai Peninsula today to head back to Anchorage, but not before a fantastic breakfast of – you guessed it! CINNAMON ROLLS! At the Moose Is Loose bakery in Soldotna. Apparently they are an Alaska thing. Story goes that when President Obama visited in 2015 he bought all the cinnamon rolls in the display […]

Homer, AK

Drove the Jeep to Homer to get some fish and beer. It’s a beautiful drive, but it rained most of the way, cleared up while we were there, and rained again most of the way back. The Homer Spit has a lot of boats and touristy shops but it was fun. Had excellent fish and […]

Seward, AK

7/29/18 Drove from Anchorage to Seward today along the Seward Highway, a national Forest Scenic Byway. The scenery was beautiful, but the traffic and wind made us hesitate to pull off for photos, so there is only one. We camped in Seward at one of the city campgrounds right on the bay. Watched the boats […]

Hatcher Pass

We drove the Jeep on the Hatcher Pass Road to see the old Independence Mine. Very narrow road and part of it was hard packed gravel, but the views from there are spectacular and well worth the drive. Then we packed up the RV and drove about an hour to Anchorage to stay for the […]

Ice Age Survivors

We continued on the Glenn Highway into Palmer today and saw 2 survivors from the ice age – the Matanuska Glacier and musk oxen (well, they looked like it anyway!) Arrived in Palmer in time for a farmer’s market and also found 2 of our favorite things – a train engine and a local brewery. […]
